Course Description: What is it that facilitates “healing” in the context of psychotherapy? Elements such as the therapeutic alliance, the theoretical orientation of the therapist, the establishment of goals, and the assessment of client progress will be addressed. Information will be presented from the latest Special Edition of the APA Journal,  “Psychotherapy : Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Relationships III”, and from “The Heart and Soul of Change, Second Edition - Delivering What Works in Therapy”. Material from the most recent “Evolution of Psychotherapy” Conference will also be reviewed, including presentations by Donald Meichenbaum, Scott Miller, Bessel van der Kolk, Irv Yalom and others. Group discussion will be encouraged, and personal /professional experiences of both the presenter and the participants will be welcomed.


Educational Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to

·       name two important elements that contribute to the success of psychotherapy outcome

·       name multiple elements that contribute to the therapeutic alliance 

·       describe a short, empirically-validated measure of client progress in therapy

Qualities of “Supershrinks”

Treatment outcome monitoring

Other perspectives on the role/goals of the therapist



About the Presenter: Dr. Griffin has been in private practice in San Luis Obispo since her arrival on the Central Coast in 1992. She has also served as a staff psychologist on the In-patient Psychiatric Unit of French Hospital Medical Center, and she has been on the clinical staff at Cal Poly University Counseling Center and the UC Davis Counseling Center. Dr. Griffin served as Director of the Reno Vet Center (affiliated with the Reno VA Medical Center), and she was a lecturer at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Prior to earning her PhD, she held an MSW degree and worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker at a Community Mental Health Clinic in Bloomington, Indiana. She also worked in a residential treatment program for women drug addicts in New York City. Dr. Griffin has done volunteer work leading groups at the Hearst Cancer Resource Center and Hospice of San Luis Obispo. She has also volunteered with the Flying Samaritans in San Quentin, Mexico. She has published on the topics of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Group Psychotherapy.


CPA is co-sponsoring with Central Coast Psychological Association. The California Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CPA maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. CPA co-sponsored credit is also accepted by the Board of Behavioral Sciences and the Board of Registered Nursing for their licensees.

Important Notice: Those who attend the workshop and complete the CPA evaluation form will receive 3 continuing education credits. Please note that APA CE rules require that we give credit only to those who attend the entire workshop.  Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time or leaving before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credits.
